On 28 August 2008 Paraguay’s Truth Commission finally presented its report to the government. It was an emotional meeting and people who were the victims of the dictatorship stood up and told their stories.
Diakonia's active role in the work for truth
Diakonia has done a lot for the commission’s work, including providing the funds to print the report and other informational material. But they haven’t only provided financial support. Through Diakonia’s work in Paraguay during the four years that the commission has worked, they have been able to start campaigns, hold meetings and pursue lobbying work that has strengthened the process.
One of Diakonia’s major contributions was to bring attention to the vulnerability of weak groups in society during the years of injustices. Diakonia has also worked to spread knowledge of the terrible crimes committed in the country.
A step towards reconciliation
By revealing a hidden history, the citizens now share a common memory, helping to foster peace and democracy, reconciliation and justice.
