Partnerships

The IHL Centre works in partnership with humanitarian, human rights, academic, diplomatic, media and civil society actors to strengthen respect for international humanitarian law and improve protection outcomes for people affected by armed conflict.

Through our partnerships, we provide independent IHL analysis, legal advice, training, tools and strategic guidance. The IHL Centre prioritises partnerships grounded in shared values and responsibility. Our partnerships help connect legal expertise with operational realities, ensuring that IHL is used in ways that are practical, credible and responsive to the needs of people affected by war.

We work with actors committed to civilian protection, humanitarian principles, and the meaningful integration of IHL into their work. By strengthening partners’ capacity, supporting adaptive learning and fostering enabling environments, we aim to contribute to tangible and sustained positive change.

Who we work with

We work with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, including:

  • humanitarian and human rights organisations and NGOs;
  • UN agencies and mechanisms;
  • Red Cross and Red Crescent actors;
  • diplomatic and policy actors;
  • academic and research institutions;
  • journalists, media organisations and public commentators;
  • donors and other actors supporting humanitarian protection.

    Our partnerships take different forms depending on the context, needs and objectives of the collaboration. This may include:

    • legal analysis and advice on specific conflicts or protection concerns;
    • training and capacity-building on IHL;
    • support to humanitarian advocacy and diplomacy;
    • expert review of reports, policies, legal analysis or advocacy materials;
    • joint research, events and publications;
    • development and dissemination of practical tools, including the Stockholm Manual;

      Across all partnerships, we aim to work in ways that are principled, inclusive, context-sensitive and grounded in legal excellence.

      Beyond Compliance Consortium

      The IHL Centre is a member of the Beyond Compliance Consortium, a co-productive socio-legal research partnership working across international law, conflict studies, humanitarian protection and human rights policy.

      The Consortium brings together academic, humanitarian and human rights organisations, alongside people with lived experience of conflict, to build evidence on promoting restraint by armed actors. Its research aims to contribute to the prevention and reduction of humanitarian need and civilian harm, and to fuller protection in war.

      Our membership reflects the Centre’s commitment to evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary collaboration and practical approaches that help humanitarian and policy actors better understand and influence the behaviour of armed actors.
