The position of Senior Legal Advisor will be expected to conduct legal research, oversee and produce reports and briefs, deliver and support training sessions and presentations. In addition, the position will support the manager in high level representation and will be responsible for leading and ensuring quality and accuracy of all legal briefs and reports emanating from the legal advisors.

Role & responsibilities:

Lead on the identification of key thematic/project priorities and conceptualize and provide legal analysis for legal briefs, reports, fact sheets and other writings; 

Responsible for leading and ensuring quality and accuracy of all legal briefs and reports emanating from the legal advisors. Lead and ensure adherence to internal processes for legal and advocacy materials including Diakonia IHL Regulations; 

Prepare and present legal briefings, trainings and presentations to relevant target groups 

Conduct legal research, report/review drafting and help desk responses; 

Represent the program at a senior level in key local and regional networks. 

Assist the Manager in maintaining and developing strategic contacts with relevant actors, including existing and potential back-donors, networks, partner organizations and like-minded organizations; 

Coordinate advocacy and external communications with Diakonia HQ, as well as with other strategic actors, collaborators (e.g. International law experts and professors) and in a range of forums, both locally and internationally.

Actively participate in development and use of internal Diakonia processes, including with respect to gender mainstreaming and advocacy. 

Minimum qualifications:

Degree in law (JD or LLM) with specialization and/or experience in international humanitarian law, international human rights law and international criminal law;

Five to ten years of experience working in the field of human rights, humanitarian law, or international law;

Excellent analytical, research, writing and editing skills;

Excellent communications skills, in particular in public speaking;

Strong knowledge about the oPt and Israel context and specific legal issues subject to analysis;

 Outstanding level of English writing proficiency;

Ability to work flexible hours in a fast-paced work environment and willingness to travel;

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility and sense of humour.

Preferable qualifications:

Command of Arabic and/or Hebrew advantageous;

Command of French an asset.

Experience working in one or multiple conflict affected environments;

Start date: 1 April 2020
Employment type: 1 year contract (with the possibility of extension)
