16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence
Today, the 25 th of November, marks the start of the campaign '16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence'. The campaign wants to raise awareness of gender based violence and to strengthen the work to end it.
It is estimated that 35% of the women in the world have experienced physical and / or sexual violence. In some countries, the number reaches 70%. Violence against women is the most common form of gender based violence and exists in all societies all over the world. It is a serious human rights violation and constitutes a global health hazard.
The campaign ’16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence’ runs every year from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day) to raise awareness of gender based violence and to strengthen the work to end it.
Support by sharing stories
Diakonia supports organisations across the world who work tirelessly against violence against women and other forms of gender based violence every day all year. This year we support the 16 days of activism by sharing stories from our partners’ work against violence in Egypt, Honduras, Bangladesh and Mozambique.
