Quest for freedom of Assembly in Cambodia

Sunday the 23d of November was the International Day to End Impunity. To highlight this day, Diakonia's partner organization in Cambodia, Licadho, published a 3.5 minute music video made up of footage from the past 14 months showing both state-sponsored abuses committed with impunity, and the resilience of Cambodian activists in the face of oppression.

Reoccuring protest

Over 300 people - representatives from civil society organizations, monks, and community members - gathered yesterday outside Prey Sar prison to protest against recent politically motivated arrests for the second consecutive Sunday in a row.

Last week ten land activists, three newly-defrocked monks and two CNRP members were arrested and sent to prison for exercising their right to peacefully protest. Eleven of them have already been swiftly tried, convicted and sentenced to one year in prison. Two other CNRP members have been in prison since last month.

The ‘Freedom of Assembly in Cambodia’ video was originally produced for the Regional Consultation on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, which took place in Nepal, Kathmandu, in September 2014.
