Exciting legal positions for international humanitarian law specialists to join Diakonia’s expanding global work on international humanitarian law. Diakonia is currently in a dynamic expansion phase of its IHL work, with the programme developing on a global level. Diakonia has over ten years’ experience running an International Humanitarian Law Resource Centre in Jerusalem.

What’s in it for me?
The position will offer an opportunity to work on international humanitarian law in a complex on-gong conflict. This job will include international travel and the opportunity to engage with IHL specialists locally and globally. For staff that excel with the IHL programme, there may be the opportunity to relocate to other IHL desks, such as ones currently in Mali and Lebanon, and in the future possibly Myanmar and Kenya.
The Legal Advisor will work within a dynamic team of legal, advocacy, information, policy and programming experts at the Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Resource Centre (IHLRC). She/he will conduct legal research, produce reports and briefs, deliver training sessions and presentations.
The position of Legal Team Coordinator/Legal Advisor, will have the additional responsibilities of high level representation and being responsible for leading and ensuring quality and accuracy of all legal briefs and reports emanating from the legal advisors, in coordination with the Manager/Senior Legal Expert. This position will also act as Acting Manager of the IHLRC when the Manager is absent or dual representation is required.
Core qualifications required:
The desired profile of both the Legal Advisor and Legal Team Coordinator/Legal Advisor is that of an individual with a specialised background and experience in international humanitarian law, with high level people and communication skills.
Degree in law (JD or LLM) with specialization and/or experience in international humanitarian law, international human rights law and international criminal law;
Excellent analytical, research, writing and editing skills;
Ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including diplomats, policy makers and state officials.
Proven organizational skills and ability to multitasking;
Excellent communications skills, in particular in public speaking;
Strong knowledge about the current oPt and Israel context
Solid experience of team work and external networking;
Outstanding level of English writing proficiency; strong command of Arabic and/or Hebrew highly desirable;
Ability to work flexible hours in a fast-paced work environment and willingness to travel;
For the Legal Team Coordinator/Legal Advisor the additional elements are expected:
Minimum 5-10 years of legal experience in more than one conflict affected context;
Experience of management.
Preference for those with existing legal right to work in Israel/Palestine.
