Our core values

We believe in life before death

Far too many people today live a life of extreme poverty and vulnerability. Diakonia believes in life before death. The belief in people’s equal value and the right of all people to a dignified life are the driving forces behind our work.

Our inspiration comes from theological sources

Diakonia’s inspiration and impetus come partly from theological sources but also from society itself. We work for people’s liberation and redress and for structures that enable a just distribution of the Earth’s resources.

Our activities are firmly rooted in the conviction that all people are created equal, in God’s image. Diakonia’s role in the Church’s mission is to share and ease the burdens of others. Our global network of empathic relationships forms the basis of our dialogue and cooperation with people worldwide, regardless of their beliefs. Together, we are changing the world.

Partner organisations are fundamental

Our efforts are aimed at people harmed by poverty, oppression and violence in various forms, regardless of their faith, skin colour or gender. As a Christian organisation, our partners naturally include several churches and ecumenical organisations. But we do not believe that Christian organisations are the only ones working for positive change. For this reason, a diversity of religious convictions is represented in our network.

Both we and our partners consider that human rights and democracy are basic requirements for human development.

Five themes are the basis of our policy

Our global work is divided into five themes, which together form the basis of our policy:

The meaning of "diakonia"

The word “diakonia” is originally Greek, meaning care or service. In the Christian tradition, “diakonia” is used to describe work for a just distribution of our common resources – the riches of Creation. The aim is to be at the service of those who need our help, to change things and to dare to believe in the ability to change things – not wait for things to happen by themselves.
