Our core values

Our vision

Diakonia has a vision – for each and every human being to live a dignified existence in a just and sustainable world, free from poverty.

What is human dignity?

Human dignity means that we are all part of God’s Creation and created in His image. Human dignity applies to every single person, irrespective of their religion, gender, ethnic background, skin colour, sexual orientation, language, ideological or political views, origins, property, ancestry or position.

The UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights emphasises the rights of the individual. All rights are universal, inseparable and equal. They are interdependent, and together they are necessary for each person to be able to live a life of dignity.

A life in dignity for all

A life of dignity also requires communion. A person cannot live in isolation: life is affirmed through encounters and communion with others. Every person must have the freedom to choose his or her spiritual and cultural communion.

Mutual responsibility

However, all people – whatever lifestyle they choose – also have a personal responsibility for the greater communion. A life of dignity requires that society as a whole works – that it is imbued with trust between people, justice, solidarity and mutual responsibility.

Rights perspective

Several international conventions which have come out of the Universal Declaration focus on the inherent dignity and value of the individual. The conventions form the basis of Diakonia’s work, and we incorporate a rights perspective in everything we do.

A peaceful living environment

There are also other key ideas and factors which Diakonia associates with a life of dignity. For instance, there is the necessity to protect God’s Creation, create a peaceful living environment, and reduce the economic and social gulfs in society.
