ICHR Calls Palestine to sign the UN Disability Convention
The Palestinian State must join the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This is a statement from the International Commission for Human Rights (ICHR), who wants to further the commitment from the Palestinian state to people living with disablities in the country.
Call on all institutions in Palestine
According to the ICHR, the issue of promoting the rights of persons with disabilities lies on all actors in society; including official Palestinian institutions, civil society organizations and media. The ICHR therefore encourage these actors to:
Intensify the rights protection for people with disabilities
Create national policies that enable people with disabilities to be a more active part in the labor market
The Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
With these encouragements in mind, the ICHR demands that the Palestinian state signs the UN Convention regarding the rights of persons with disabilities. Signing this convention would not only be an important statement from the Palestinian state to the targeted community; it would also mean that Palestine must make efforts to:
Prohibit all forms of discrimination towards the group
Promote access to employment
Adjust laws regarding the rights of people with disability to meet international standards
International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The release date of the ICHR press release is no coincidence. The 3rd of December is known worldwide as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which aims to communicate the rights and situation of people living with disabilities. The day has been promoted by the UN since 1992, and it was sprung from the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons between 1983-1992.
